Here’s a practical guide to help you get started smoothly:
Know the Basics Before Your Arrive
- Review your Role & Responsibilities: understand your job role. Knowing what to expect helps reduce first-day jitters.
- Learn about the facility or workplace: Get a feel for the place you’ll be working- Size, number of residents, staff, programs, and special are programs.
- Understand infection control procedures: Hand hygiene, PPE use, and cleaning protocols are essential in aged care settings.
Bring the Essentials
- Comfortable, clean uniform or clothes as specified
- Supportive, close-toe shoes
- Photo identification, Certification or licences required
- Required items to complete shift notes
- Personal items (water, snacks)
Arrive Early and Introduce Yourself
Arriving 10-15 minutes early not only shows professionalism, but it also gives you the time to settle into your new roles. Taking the initiative to introduce yourself to your work colleagues and finding the important areas (Break room, Restrooms etc.)
Be Ready to Listen and Learn
- Your first shift is a chance to observe and absorb how things work
- Pay close attention during handover or shift briefings.
- Don’t hesitate to ask questions- your team wants you to succeed!
Building a Rapport with Residents
Approaching clients with a warm smile introducing yourself, taking time to listen to their needs and preferences can go a long way. It’s important to remember, respect and be patient to build trust with them.
Practise Self Care
- Your work can be physically and emotionally demanding.
- Take your scheduled breaks, stay hydrated, and checking with yourself throughout the shift.
- If you feel overwhelmed, reach out to your supervisor or agency support.
Reflect and Follow Up
- After your Shift, take a moment to reflect on what went well and what you learned.
- Reach out to Agency management if you have feedback or questions.
- Celebrate your process- it’s the first step in a rewarding career!
